On February 10, 2026, OpenAI announced updates to ChatGPT’s deep research tool, adding a full-screen document viewer that transforms how users interact with AI-generated reports. According to The Verge, the new viewer allows users to open ChatGPT’s research outputs in a separate window, complete with a table of contents on the left side and a list of sources on the right.
Deep research, which OpenAI first launched in late 2025, already allowed ChatGPT to scour the web and compile in-depth reports on user-selected topics. The tool positioned ChatGPT not just as a conversational assistant but as a research agent, capable of synthesizing information across multiple sources into coherent long-form content. With this latest update, users can now specify which websites and connected apps ChatGPT should prioritize in its research, giving them more control over the scope and sourcing of the final report.
The new interface also introduces real-time tracking of ChatGPT’s research progress. Users can watch as the AI gathers information, and they can intervene mid-process to edit the scope or add new sources while the report is still being generated. Once complete, reports can be downloaded in multiple formats: Markdown, Word, and PDF. The feature is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers immediately, with access coming to the lower-cost ChatGPT Go tier and free users in the following days.
